Regarded as the royal of the forest, the ʻieʻie is found in dense, healthy forests. The flower appears at the tip of the woody vine, proudly standing high in the ʻōhiʻa trees.
Chants tell us of its hierarchy both in the forest and on the kuahu hula. Ceremonial chants at the dedication of the kuahu, dedicate the 'ie'ie to Laka, the deity of the forest.
The long aerial roots were fashioned into mahiʻole, fish and shrimp traps, and into the framework for ʻulīʻulī.
