ʻĀina is the Hawaiian word for “land." It’s a compound word comprised of the words ‘ai and na which together mean “that which feeds.” It can be understood in the broadest possible sense of the word, encompassing not merely the physical land itself but the life-sustaining essence of its nature. 

'Āina Rights is premised on the simple idea that land in Hawaiʻi is a living entity, deserving of humankind's mutual respect.
