These words were first spoken by King Kamehameha III on July 31, 1843 after independence was restored to the Hawaiian Kingdom following five months of British occupation. It was adopted as Hawai‘i's state motto and is commonly translated as, "the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness." Given the phrase's origin though, it should also be viewed as a declaration of sovereignty for the land and independence for Hawaiʻi.
